Hellgate London Demo – Video with First Impressions

Hellgate London – a title I actually “casually overlooked”, in the shadow of the impending releases of both Crysis and Call Of Duty 4 (Rumour had it that Singapore released COD4 2 days ahead of the US!)

It’s a mistake that shouldn’t have been made.

First off, it’s an RPG, not really an FPS. It really hits you when the first screen you see is the “Create A Character” screen, not a cinematic story like in FPSes. In the video later you can see that you can zoom out from first person, to third person view, and vice versa. I guess they did this because some people are MMORPG veterans and are very used to seeing their character’s butts 🙂

The second thing that they did, which reminded me of an MMO, is that they made Quest-givers have an exclamation point over their heads, like Everquest or World of Warcraft.

In the short time that I’ve spent inside the demo, I think I will like the actual game when it does come out. Checking out the options screen, I see controls for “Party” and “Friends List”, which imply that Hellgate London may very well be co-operatively played online! Like a modern-day D&D game!

Like all RPGs, you find loot on dead monsters, you can buy and sell your loot in “towns”, which in this game, are actually subway (or “tube” like the British would say) stations. It’s not shown in the video, but I actually managed to amass enough cash to buy a whole new set of armour and even upgrade my weapon to a more kick-ass version.

Ok on to the video. Before that happens, here’s the obligatory info:

My 4-year-old rig config:

P4 3.0Ghz
2GB DDR400 RAM
nVidia 7600GT AGP

And here’s a screenshot of the auto-detect graphic settings on my rig:

Remember to click to enlarge if you can’t see the settings. So, without further ado, here’s a short 6-minute snippet of me running around inside the game. It’s relatively smooth, I’d say between 15 to 30 frames per second. Very good indeed, considering my rig is 4 years old.

Crysis Demo In-Game Footage

Crysis Demow as released not so long ago. The demo file itself is a whopping 1.7 gigs! I’m only on Starhub’s lowest plan, the 6Mbps one, and it took me about 45 mins at almost full speed to download the whole thing. What is even more amazing is that I didn’t download it off local servers. I downloaded it off EA’s US servers.

Was it worth it?

In a word, yes!

Check out the video below:

It’s just a short 6-minute snippet from the “first level” of the game. From here I could already tell I’d be hooked (youtube allows only up to a 10-minute clip).

For those who might be interested, the game ran at 1024×768 with ALL graphic settings on LOW (autodetect). Actually, it autodetected my “optimal settings” should have been at 800×600, but I bumped it up to 1024×768.

Even so, at LOW settings, the game looks great. Considering that it’s supposed to run its best on DirectX 10, ie a Windows Vista system, my 4 year old rig could run it at that setting, and still look great, is nothing short of amazing!

My 4 year old rig:

Pentium 4 3.0Ghz HT
2GB DDR400 RAM
nvidia 7600GT AGP

So, don’t worry people… even if you have a 4 yr old rig like me, you can still play it really well, if you go for 800×600, and all settings at LOW. You’re still getting amazing eye-candy at this level.

But hey, if you’re too poor to upgrade your PC (like me), there’s not much you can do anyway eh?

Tabula Rasa, NWN2 Expansion

I popped by Sim Lim yesterday. I had time to kill, before meeting up for the usual Friday night All-Guys-Out night.

As usual, I headed for my game shop. It’s like a holy pilgrimage, I tell you. Everytime I step in there, I’m tempted left, right and centre. New games! New HOT games! All begging for my wallet to be opened, and my cash to fly right out.

I pored over the offerings, and my eyes fixed on the Tabula Rasa pre-order kit! Near to it, was the Expansion pack for Neverwinter Nights 2. Dammit!

Now, I’ve always said I’m gonna go play Tabula Rasa when it’s open for the public. Now, looking at my schedules, and also at my recent trend of playing games (more like NOT playing), I decided against Tabula Rasa for now. It wouldn’t do for me to call in sick to play Tabular Rasa right about now. Also, I remember my EQ2 guildmaster telling me, if I ever get onto Tabula Rasa, I am welcome to set up a branch of the guild there. So, should I? Hmmm… I’ve never liked being the boss anyway. I don’t know, I’ll have to sleep on it.

As for Neverwinter Nights 2, well… I haven’t seen many viable PWs (persistent worlds) pop up yet. For the benefit of those who do not know, PWs in NWN are almost like MMORPGs. A bunch of people, up to 64 I believe, converge on a server and go adventuring together. The server owner or admin will set up a whole world for the players to play. Think of it as a small-scale MMORPG, except that it’s free. Yeah, no money needed.

It was on a NWN (original NWN) PW that I met some really good friends. I still keep in contact with them via Xfire. One has gone off on to WoW and City of Villians, the other is stuck in Second Life.

Me? I’m stuck in my First Life – The Real World ™.

Work truly sucks.
